Raindrop Technique Massage
By: Jackie King, COTA/L, LMT, CIMI
Raindrop Technique Massage (RT) is a healing tool using various therapeutic
grade essential oils in a specific sequence, dropped and/or drizzled along the
spine and spinal column. Very light massage is then used to stimulate the skin’s
surface in order to allow the body to absorb the oils and initiate healing where
it is needed.
What to expect with Raindrop Technique Massage:
It stimulates every bone, organ and muscle of the body at the cellular level.
Boosts the immune system and brings the body into structural and electrical
balance.
It enables the release of toxins or disease wherever lodged, whether in the
body, mind or spirit or/emotion
It is usually done in silence in an attitude of prayer, which enables the
facilitator to concentrate and the client to internalize and focus on the
healing that is requested.
The client is the principle participant in his/her own healing with God. The
facilitator is merely the vessel assisting the client.
The maladies of the body are in layers, and only those layers the client is
ready and willing to release will be released.
RT is a complete modality in and of itself, and reaches all levels of the
body, mind and spirit. One main purpose is to awaken the client’s internal
healing power gifted from God.
RT can lead to permanent healing. The healing varies widely from client to
client, according to individual needs and their willingness to release. Because
our ailments are layered, it may take more than one session to “peel” away and
let go of these conditions. A change in diet, exercise, environment, and habits
may be necessary for a more complete healing to occur.
Strong emotional releases are possible. The aroma of the oils will go directly
to the central brain where memories are stored. Memories can also be stored in
the muscles, tissues and organs of the body, and when therapeutic grade
essential oils are introduced, the client may experience a release of forgotten
memories, and crying or moaning may occur.
Benefits may not be immediately apparent, but adjustments will continue
throughout the week. Changes may be subtle, and larger corrections may need to
wait until the client is ready to release them.
Occasional skin sensitivities occur and this is generally due to an acidic
environment in the body or a highly toxic system. Therapeutic grade essential
oils are generally safe when applied directly and undiluted onto the skin.
Adjustments can be made during the RT routine to accommodate for these
sensitivities.
D. Gary Young, the founder of Young Living Essential Oils, developed the
Raindrop Technique based on 3 things,
(1) his research with essential oils as
antimicrobial agents,
(2) his knowledge of the reflex points in the feet and
(3)
information on effleurage (finger stroking) and its effect on the muscles and
the nervous system that he learned from the Lakota people in South Dakota.
While visiting the Lakota people, Young learned that for several generations,
before the US/Canadian border was established, the Lakota Indians migrated
across the Canadian border into the northern regions of Saskatchewan and
Manitoba. There, they often witnessed the Northern Lights, or the Aurora
Borealis. The ill among them would stand facing the Northern Lights and inhale
deeply. They believed that when the Lights were visible, the air was charged
with healing energy. They would mentally ‘inhale’ this energy allowing it to
pass through their spine and on to other afflicted areas of the body through
neurological pathways. Many experienced dramatic healing effects through this
practice.
Eventually, after the border made migrations impossible, the Lakota began to use
effleurage, or feathered finger stroking, which became associated with this
healing technique. They continued their practice of mentally processing energy,
coupled with effleurage, to distribute healing energy throughout the body.
Young found that when this Lakota practice was coupled with the energy created
by essential oils and Vita Flex or special reflexology on the feet, its effects
were greatly heightened. Since its formal adoption in 1989, Raindrop Technique
has received an enormous amount of praise from users all over the world for its
help with relaxation, emotional release, tissue cleansing and help with spinal
misalignments, including scoliosis, kyphosis and chronic back pain. It has
eliminated the need for back surgery for hundreds of people, and had positive
results with inflammatory diseases, such as Multiple Sclerosis.
A growing amount of scientific research shows that certain microorganisms lodge
near the spinal cord and contribute to deformities. Researchers at the
University of Bonn have also found the varicella zoster virus can lodge in the
spinal ganglia throughout life. Research in 2001 further corroborated the
existence of infectious microorganisms as a cause of spine pain and
inflammation. Alistair Stirling and his colleagues at the Royal Orthopedic
Hospital in Birmingham, England, found that 53 percent of patients with severe
sciatica tested positive for chronic, low-grade infection by gram-negative
bacteria (particularly Propionibacterium acnes) which triggered inflammation
near the spine. Research at the Pasteur Institute in France, published in The
New England Journal of Medicine, documented increasing numbers of patients
showing evidence of spinal disease (Pott’s disease), caused by tuberculosis. In
addition, vaccines made from live viruses have been linked to spinal problems. A
1982 study by Pincott and Taff found a connection between oral poliomyelitis
vaccines and scoliosis.
The use of undiluted essential oils in RT is consistent with the French model
for aromatherapy, the most extensively practiced and studied model in the world,
with over 40 years of experience using essential oils clinically. A lengthy
roster of French physicians provides convincing evidence that undiluted
essential oils have a valuable place in the therapeutic arsenal of clinical
professionals. Dr. P’enoel stated: “What happens when we use essential oils
without diluting them? With many current essential oils, nothing dangerous or
serious can happen.”
In summarizing, Raindrop Technique Massage is one of the safest, noninvasive
techniques available for spinal health. It is also an invaluable tool to promote
healing from within using topically applied essential oils. The oils are some of
the most powerful inhibitors of microbes known, and as such are an important new
weapon in combating many types of tissue infections. Terry Friedman, MD of
Westminster, Colorado, stated that “these essential oils truly represent a new
frontier of medicine: they have resolved cases that many professional had
regarded as hopeless.”
