Infant Massage
St. Charles County
Women’s Journal Article
The beautiful art of infant massage is a form of touching and
non verbal communication that spans many generations and cultures. It expresses
love in the purest form, through warm and tender touch. Through loving touch,
the bond between an infant and parent is strengthened, there is an increase in
self esteem for the parent, as well as the child and the child’s sense of love,
acceptance, respect and trust greatly improves. When parents learn their child’s
cues, and react appropriately, their confidence in their parenting skills
improve, as does the quality time spent with their child.
In
addition to the many psychological benefits, many physical benefits exist. With
regular massage, there is a greater sense of body awareness, improved muscle
tone and coordination, increased circulation, reduction in stress and pain from
teething, colic or a post surgical event is decreased. Infant Massage is a
wonderful way to aid in digestion and elimination, which in turn will improve
weight gain. Infants who receive regular massage spend more time in the quiet
alert state, which will improve his/her attention span and have an impact on
their intellectual ability.
Parents and caregivers who learn this beautiful routine are able to communicate
love and affection to their child, and help them adapt and easily adjust to many
difficult situations in life. Children who are massaged routinely are less
aggressive, less violent, and more compassionate. When a child feels his/her
needs are being met, both physically and psychologically, the home is a happier
and healthy place for everyone.
